I discovered Nordic Walking about 9 years ago at the World Spinning Conference in Miami. I was introduced to a gentleman who was promoting a curriculum on what he coined “Fit-Trek”. The classes led groups of trekkers down the beach in Miami. You can only imagine the looks they got while they made their way down the beach with ski poles in 90 degree sunny weather?
Later that evening I was invited to a dinner held for the conference presenters and ended up sitting next to the Fit Trek presenter. After a few glasses of wine, I started to loosen up and ask questions about snow skiing on the beach. He began to explain the program and the benefits. The conversation evolved into him asking if I was willing to do a study on the efficacy of the poles fat burning benefits. I agreed and he sent me a pair which ended up in my garage for quite some time before I go around to them.
On a whim, one day I grabbed the poles and set out for the gym which was about 4 miles away. I immediately picked up on how the poles provided support while adding work to the upper body while reducing the load on the back and knees. Suffice to say, I was intrigued.
I put the poles to work while working with one of my obese female clients and learned I was able to get her to burn far more calories than with other traditional methods of cardio such as a treadmill, stationary bike or walking. She happily began training 60-90 minutes per day on them. I was so pleased to; finally find a tool that encouraged my heavy clients to train consistently. Since then we began to employ Nordic Walking into all of our fitness workouts. I found that using the poles is a great way to cross train for endurance runners too!
Who is a candidate for Nordic Walking?
I highly recommend Nordic Walking to just about everyone. It is leisurely, it gets you outdoors, it can be employed on road or trail and is a great fat burning stress reducer. We’ve done 9 marathon distance group training sessions through the Santa Monica Mountains and now plan several more similar challenges for our friends and clients in the coming years.
Why is it better for weight loss than walking? Because the poles engage more muscle and even though your perception of work does not seem greater, your caloric out put is higher.
Why is it better than running for weight loss? Most people who need to lose weight and try to run to lose it tend to run a very high heart rate which burns almost exclusively sugar for energy. Nordic Walking places you in a very unique “Fat burning zone” which burns as much as 40% more fat than does running. |
